Friday, February 4, 2011 was an exhilarating day for the management, staff, and students of Delta English School, Sharjah. The 18 year-old C.B.S.E. school delivered its first grand cultural display at the Indian Pavilion, located in the Global Village, Dubai. Delta English School designed a show that gave viewers a glimpse of the various cultural facets associated with each state of India through the use of performing arts.

The event commenced at 7:30 p.m. with an exquisite opening of a classical music performance, sung by five artistes. Following this was a Mohiniyatom performance, a traditional south Indian dance hailing from the state of Kerala and which is one of the eight Indian classical dances. The artiste’s expressions, swaying movements, and gentle footwork reflected not only the intrinsic beauty of the dance but also conveyed the charm and tranquility of its state of origin. The renowned Tamil Nadu-based dance form, Bharathanatyam, graced the event where the artiste gave justice to the performance by displaying the dance’s four elements – expression, rhythm, beat, and movement.

Talented student singers rendered their voices and performed cinematic music on Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. In addition to the single artistes, the event showcased group events with each group representing the different rivers of India.

Group Ganga, comprising of 10 artistes, energized the stage and spectators with a dance to the acclaimed song Zubi Dubi Do from the Hindi movie, Three Idiots. Group Hoogli, comprising of 16 artistes, displayed an Indo-American hybridized dance that blended country western moves with Bollywood.

Group Godavari, comprising of 12 artistes, saluted the state of Maharashtra through a Maharashtrian folk dance utilizing laziums. Group Krishna, comprising of 8 artistes, performed the traditional folk dance from the western Indian state of Gujarat, Dandiya, where elements of the Holi festival and Navarathri were depicted. Group Periyar graced the stage with Oppana, a traditional dance form originating from the north Malabar area of Kerala while group Mahanadi gave tribute by performing Karim, a tribal dance from the state of Orissa.

Group Jhelum rocked the stage with a Bangra dance from Punjab, depicting the Punjabi farmers celebrating the coming of the harvest season. Groups Netravati, Sutlej, Thamira Bharani, Yamuna, Kaveri, Indus, Brahmaputra, Amaravati, Bhavani, and Sabarmati spiced the event with Hindi, Tamil, and fusion dances.             The event concluded with a seven artiste instrumental performance featuring live music.

"Our participation in the 2011 Indian Pavilion was a 4-month planning process. The SSP segment of our school worked closely with our event coordinators to create a show that will send viewers amazed and content with their time and money’s worth at our event.” said Mrs. Anita D’cruz, Principal, Delta English School.

The event lasted up to 12:30 a.m. and drew in one of the largest groups of spectators ever witnessed at the Indian Pavilion. SSP (Student Success Program) is a segment of Delta English School that strives to promote and create student-centered initiatives that cover a wide range specialized areas geared on enhancing student life at school.
