It has been 39 years since its independence on December 02, 1971 that the United Arab Emirates continues to project itself as an exemplar on the world front as a nation with spirit, cultural diversity, visionary governmental leadership, economic superiority, and as the land of immense educational, research, investment, and job opportunities. To commemorate the UAE Independence Day, Delta English School hosted its 18th Annual Spirit Week on December 06 and 07 of 2010.
A two-day tradition of the school, Spirit Week facilitated a school-wide participation and featured numerous exhibits and seminars reflecting UAE life. The chief guest for Spirit week was Mrs. Nadia, Chief Officer for Girl Guides in UAE who remarked that “The Delta English School Annual Spirit Week is the a good venue if one wants to experience Arab culture to the fullest.â€
Day one (Dec 06) was started with splendor as Principal D’cruz hoisted the 4-stripped color flag as the school sang the national anthem in ensemble. Following this, numerous art and cuisine exhibits took position at the Outdoor Playing Field, where each exhibit competed against the other for the winning cup. From chicken to tuna and cheese to mayo, junior kindergarten presented “Wicked Sandwiches,†a healthy sandwich spread that sent the tasters requesting for more. “Grade A Burgers†was the topic of senior kindergarten where meat and veggie burgers were spun straight from the oven onto the taster’s plate, served with a choice of sauces and the veggie works. Grade level I stepped up a notch in their “Advanced Sandwiches,†where student chefs went literally bizarre in their creations and managed to convey a new trend in sandwich development. If you wanted to quench your thirst, the “Macedonia†stand by grade level II was right around the corner where visitors could order their favorite fruit cocktails from a selection of exotic and local fresh fruits. For those in the mood of Italian, “Pasta Fiesta†was the place to be where grade level III whipped up concoctions of pasta ranging from spaghetti to maccheroni and fusilli, a true tribute to Italy. Grade level IV exposed their floristic abilities by converting numerous flower species into classical and contemporary art in “Fun with Flora.†“Angelo’s Pizzeria†helmed the hot spot location as visitors flocked in and out, indulging in all sorts and shapes of pizza served with fresh cheese and a choice of toppings. As if the spread was not enough, there was even a treat for vegetarians in grade level VI’s “Vegan’s Delight†where visitors were shown numerous ways one can avoid meat and still enjoy a sumptuous meal. The day came to a halt with grade level VII’s “Ceramic Décor,†which showcased pottery reminiscent of the Gravettian figurines at Dolni Vestonice.
Day two (Dec 07) dwelt on evidences that heritage and culture are still immensely rooted in the modern Arab world. Thanks to the extensive exhibits painstakingly created by the Arabic department, visitors got a close-to-accurate experience of Arab life and culture. From the kanduras and abayas donned by boys and girls respectively, the elaborate majlis interiors, Arab literature and cultural seminars from field experts, varied selection of dates, traditional Emirati tea, Arab poetry, art, language and music, each visitor was provided the opportunity to create his or her customized learning quest and discover answers, from the Arab literary and social experts, about questions that had them intrigued about this mystical region.
