SSP (Student Success Program) consistently undergoes great lengths to ensure that all field trips for an academic year are carefully matched to the needs and age requirements of the student while attaining the learning objectives as delivered by the respective faculty members. Although all field trips were concentrated in third semester for this year, the wait was worth the effort.
Following a thorough search and screening within Sharjah, the decision was settled on four prime and notable locations. To top it up, each grade level was assigned a different date to the location so that instructors could teach students on what they observe within their venue without the distraction of supervising a huge student crowd. Junior kindergarten, senior kindergarten and grade level I students were escorted to the Green Belt Park. Located northeast of Sharjah, this 137,055 sq meters park comprises of various gardens, a lake surrounded by generous water fountains and a large theater with an audience seating capacity of 250 people. Being a perfectly secure area supplemented with high perimeter fencing and an open zone that enables even distant adult observation, students were permitted to identify and appreciate flora based on what they have learned in class, discuss various natural phenomena relevant to the park and perform various types of athletic and sporting activities.
The Discovery Centre witnessed a curious bunch when they had students from grade level II on board. Designed to promote awareness of science and technology in daily life, the Discovery Centre is proud to be the only hands-on children’s museum in the UAE. Science and other faculty members infused a new dimension to museum enjoyment as they held on going theoretical and practical open discussions on the various interactive modules and exhibits that included species and habitats of marine life, anatomy and physiology of the human body, nutrition, driving and safe drivers, construction, sports and animal life. According to one of the supervising faculty members, “This place is like an intercepting zone because the theoretical knowledge one gains in the classroom is allowed to cross with interactive applications one can witness here.” Grade level III and IV students received the opportunity to study, receive first-hand experience and understand the UAE marine environment at the famous Sharjah Aquarium, where advanced technology, cutting-edge design and re-constructed habitats permitted student access through numerous tunnels and over bridges so as to gain differing perspectives on over 250 exotic and local species.
28 km away from Sharjah, en route to Al Dhaid, students of grade level V, VI and VII were treated as budding scientists at the Sharjah Desert Park, where they closely interacted with ornithologists, ichthyologists, botanists and other available wildlife experts at all three locations within the park - the Natural History Museum featuring flora and fauna endemic to the Arabian desert; Arabian Wildlife Centre featuring over 100 animal species; and the Children’s Farm specialized for petting domestic species. Ultimately, the proven success of this entire initiative by SSP was the spectacular ratings received by students and faculty alike along with positive learning feedback.
